Pixels to Pieces
May 7 - August 1, 2025
Exhibition Statement
Pixels to Pieces was the culminating exhibition for students in Design & Fabrication Studio, bringing together projects that transformed conceptual visions into tangible artistic forms. The show blended contemporary digital processes with hands-on fabrication methods, and the works on display foregrounded creative risk-taking, critical thinking, and a thoughtful synthesis of digital and physical artistry.
The course asked students to develop visual and sculptural ideas in the abstract, then test how those ideas change when they become objects in wood, plastic, resin, paper, and other materials. In the gallery, those translations from file to form became a shared record of experimentation, technical problem-solving, and material discovery.
Each work reflected an independent project shaped through research, critique, software, and fabrication time in the MIX Lab.
The exhibition grew from a semester of working across digital modeling, 3D printing, scanning, laser cutting, and modular fabrication. Students learned to move between the screen and the object, using software as a place for invention while treating fabrication tools as part of the artistic process rather than simply a means of production.
The course also asked students to consider the difference between technical skill and artistic intent. In that spirit, Pixels to Pieces presented digital fabrication as more than a demonstration of machines or materials; it showed how precision, planning, failure, revision, and hand assembly can carry personal meaning and become part of a finished work.
Participating students: Elliott Benson, Tucker Edwards, Jacob Eppley, Alelie Farkas, Nolan Felker, Logan Jacobina, Anna Leach, Ian Opdycke, Hayley Shay, and Mako Steiner.
